50 years since the coup in Chile: Lessons on the state
Monday 11th September 2023 marked 50 years since the coup in Chile, when General Pinochet and the military – backed by US imperialism – violently overthrew the socialist government of Salvador Allende.
Allende’s election was the first time in history that a candidate who identified as a Marxist came to power through the electoral route. As president, however, Allende failed to carry the revolution through to its conclusion. The ensuing counterrevolution was relentless. The cost was paid by millions of Chilean workers.
In this session, Jorge Martin will detail essential lessons on the state and the limits of reformism from the coup in Chile — lessons we must absorb for the sake of future class struggle.
